Upstream WHOIS Provider Outage Impacting ASM Seed Discovery

Incident Report for Censys

Update

Censys has implemented the identified solution across all customer workspaces and re-enabled CSD alerts for many customers. We are continuing to monitor a small number of workspaces with residual issues and are contacting affected customers directly.

Update

Censys has tested the solution across customer workspaces, and the results are promising. We will provide further updates on the feasibility of re-enabling continuous seed discovery emails this week.

Update

Censys is continuing to test the identified solution across all workspaces. We will share another update on the result of the testing later this week.

Update

Censys is continuing to test the identified solution across all customer workspaces, and we are expecting testing to be completed by next week. At that point, Censys will be able to determine if continuous seed discovery emails can be re-enabled.

Update

Censys has identified an solution to mitigate the registration data rate limiting. We are testing this approach across all customer workspaces

Update

Censys is still working through additional improvements that will fully mitigate rate limiting by the upstream domain registrars. We are targeting a 100% success rate for all domains before re-enabling alerting for continuous seed discovery.

Update

The changes that were deployed yesterday made a positive impact. We are now seeing registration data come back for the vast majority of domains. However, additional work is needed to increase the domain coverage further and re-enable email alerts for continuous seed discovery. Censys is investigating additional changes with our upstream data provider to provide this.

Identified

We have seen significant improvements to registration information accuracy for a large portion of customer domains. This has been accomplished by working with one of our upstream data providers to better handle rate limiting. However, we are continuing to see data problems with a different subset of customer domains. Censys is testing a set of fixes to resolve these data problems. We will be providing an update tomorrow on the success of these fixes and if additional improvements are needed.

Update

Censys is now supporting both WHOIS and RDAP data, reducing the impact to seed discovery. However, intermittent data is still being returned for some domains. Censys is working to resolve the data gaps with our upstream provider. For now, valid domains without WHOIS and RDAP registration data are being preserved in the inventory.

Update

The WHOIS servers operated by an upstream provider remain unresponsive, causing continuous seed discovery in Censys ASM to remove or fail to re-confirm domains registered through that provider.

To prevent any further disruptions, we’ve temporarily suspended continuous seed discovery while we implement an interim solution and engage with the upstream provider. We are actively monitoring the situation

Investigating

The WHOIS servers operated by an upstream provider have been unresponsive, causing continuous seed discovery in Censys ASM to remove or fail to re-confirm domains registered through the provider. As a result, customers whose seed inventories depend on those WHOIS lookups may see those seeds temporarily dropped from their inventory.
We are actively monitoring the situation
